The First Generation Matching Grant Program is a relatively new financial aid program that was enacted by the 2006 Florida legislature.  It offers financial aid to Florida undergraduates whose parents have not received a bachelor’s degree; thus the recipient would be the first generation to receive such a degree. This grant is need-based and requires the student to file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).  Applicants must be a Florida resident in order to receive this Florida financial aid, and must be accepted to one of the state universities in Florida.  Students may apply immediately after high school or later, whenever they are actually attending school.

The amount of this particular Florida financial aid grant is actually based on the student’s need assessment, but of course cannot exceed the cost of attendance.  Students may obtain additional information by consulting the state of Florida’s financial aid website or inquiring at the financial aid office at any of the public universities in Florida. There’s another Florida financial aid grant for Florida residents called the Florida Resident Access Grant, or FRAG.  This grant provides tuition assistance to Florida undergraduate students who are attending a private not-for-profit Florida university.  The Florida student financial aid website maintains a list of the 28 eligible universities, and students are to apply for this grant through those universities.  As long as the student continues to meet eligibility requirements, he or she may continue to receive FRAG funding for a maximum of nine semesters or 14 quarters.

Almost every state has financial aid programs particular to that state, and Florida residents are fortunate to have Florida financial aid available in several such state programs.  In addition, nearly all the colleges and universities in Florida offer some type of scholarship program, including departmental scholarships and endowed scholarships. Essentially, the student’s financial need is assessed and within a few weeks the information is sent to the college the student has chosen.
